Ghent is a direct descendent of "sacred steel" legends. His great uncle Willie Eason was among those who popularized gospel lap steel in the early 1900's, and his father Aubrey Ghent tours the world playing lap steel for the Slide Brothers. While Ghent grew up playing lap steel, he has chosen to take the roots of his family’s musical heritage and definitively place it in the present, using custom-made stand-up eight-string lap steel and Telecaster hybrids – rocket ships for his incendiary playing.

After growing up in Florida, Ghent eventually moved to Atlanta and immediately began gigging and performing at jam sessions around the city. He was quickly discovered by local legend Col. Bruce Hampton, who invited Ghent to join his band. While playing with Col. Bruce, Ghent continued honing his steel guitar sound and learned to be more spontaneous onstage – something that the AJ Ghent Band lives by today.

The AJ Ghent Band was hand picked by Zac Brown as a support act on the Zac Brown Band’s 2013 U.S. tour. Ghent also played on the Zac Brown Band’s 2013 release The Grohl Sessions Vol. 1. Additionally, the band has also played alongside Gov’t Mule and the Allman Brothers, and opened for Robert Cray.

The AJ Ghent Band is AJ Ghent (vocals, guitar), his wife MarLa Ghent (backing vocals), his sister Tiffany Ghent (backing vocals), Seth Watters (bass), Gary Paulo (saxophone, guitar) and Will Groth (drums).
