Banda Magda One Of “10 New Musical Gems” On Latest Edition Of KCRW Rhythm Planet, Tigre Out Sept 15 On Verve/GroundUP
July 31, 2017 - KCRW Rhythm Planet host Tom Schnabel has selected Banda Magda’s “Tam Tam” as one of his “10 new musical gems” on the latest edition of the show. “Tam Tam” is a standout from the “wonderful new album” (KCRW) Tigre, out September 15th on Verve Label Group/GroundUP Music.
A rainbow-bold meditation on courage, confidence, and resisting fear, Tigre is a wildly cinematic album and a rallying cry to speak up and stand out. It presents Banda Magda leader, composer, multi-instrumentalist, and firecracker performer Magda Giannikou’s most coherent and brightly orchestrated work to date.
Luxuriant string sections and punches of brass, hammered dulcimer and tubular bells, meet maracatu and forro rhythms. Giannikou sings her tales in whatever language feels right, be it French, Greek, Spanish, or Portuguese. The polyglot, global influences meld, however, into breathtaking flights of fancy. “I’ve been surrounded by people from all over the world, my bandmates and collaborators,” says Giannikou. “And the community we have built feels like a rocket of courage.” On Tigre, that rocket growls to new heights of lush, unstoppable boldness.
Banda Magda’s coast-to-coast U.S. tour kicks off next month, and includes a show at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City on August 17th, as well as two NYC album releases show at Joe’s Pub – September 13th with strings and September 14th with horns. Full list of tour dates here.
