American Songwriter Premieres First Track “Listen,” Stream Here:

March 20, 2014 – BettySoo - the Austin, TX standout who crafts “beautiful, heart-wrenching songs that are also edgy and unwavering” (KUT) – will release her bold new album When We’re Gone on May 27.   The album is a musical document of BettySoo’s past five years and the madness circling around her and those she loved.  Divorces, rehab, mental hospitals, runaways, innocence lost.  The Austin American-Statesman has said BettySoo creates "exceptionally well-arranged songs, as easily equal in precision to, say, Patty Griffin or Alison Krauss” with “a confidence that speaks volumes,” and When We’re Gone builds on this impressive template.

“Listen” opens the album with an off-kilter, almost tribal beat and an insistent cello, building slowly before eventually giving way to a searing guitar solo.   The earworm chorus gives the illusion that “Summertime” is possibly a breezy ode to a warm and happy time of year, but the song itself is a disarming tale of innocence lost.  “The Things She Left Town With” is a mournful dirge, with lyrics that serve as a dark scrapbook of BettySoo’s time among friends working through various recoveries.  “100 Different Ways Of Being Alone” speaks to depression, and the idea that there are always people around you, but in the pit of despair it feels like there is no one.

BettySoo and Brian Standefer produced When We’re Gone at his studio in Buda, TX.  Standefer plays cello throughout the album, adding a unique texture, while BettySoo’s vocals and expertly crafted melodies remain the focal point.  The album also features Glenn Fukunaga on bass, Dave Terry and Rick Richards on drums and percussion, Joey Colarusso on clarinet and flute (“Lullaby”), Will Sexton on guitar (“The Things She Left Town With,” “Summertime”), and Lloyd Maines on pedal steel (“Last Night”).

BettySoo’s last album, Heat Sin Water Skin, received a great deal of airplay, including spins at influential Non-Comm/Triple A stations WFUV, WXPN, KGSR, KDRP and SiriusXM’s The Loft.

BettySoo will be touring the U.S. in support of When We’re Gone.  Current dates can be found here, with many more to be announced soon:
