October 20, 2023 – Inspired by the events investigated in David Grann’s 2017 book Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI (and depicted in the new Martin Scorsese film Killers of the Flower Moon), Charley Crockett today releases his new song “Killers of the Flower Moon,” co-written with T-Bone Burnett. The song tells the true story of a series of murders of the Osage people in Osage County, Oklahoma in the 1920’s. Written two years ago but just recorded last week at Fort Horton Studio and Bud’s Recording Service in Austin, TX, Crockett recorded “Killers of the Flower Moon” with longtime friends and collaborators Billy Horton (bass) and Jay Moeller (drums).

After large oil deposits were discovered beneath their land, the Osage people became some of the wealthiest individuals in the United States near the beginning of the 20th century. In 1923 alone the tribe took in more than $30 million dollars, the equivalent of over $500 million in 2023. Beginning in 1921, a series of murders of Osage people began happening in quick succession. By 1925, at least sixty wealthy Osage had died and their land had been inherited or deeded to their guardians, who were local white lawyers and businessmen. When local and state officials were unable or unwilling to help solve the murders, the Bureau of Investigations (the preceding agency to the FBI) were brought in and eventually found that the murders were part of a conspiracy led by cattleman and “King of the Osage Hills” William Hale to murder members of the Osage people in order to steal their oil fortunes. According to Grann’s book, there may have been hundreds who were killed because of their ties to the oil.

The release of “Killers of the Flower Moon” continues a busy 2023 for Crockett. He released his last full-length album The Man From Waco - which Rolling Stone named the #2 best Country album of the year - in 2022, and the momentum he built has continued into 2023. Over a three month stretch earlier this year, Crockett made his NPR Tiny Desk debut, appeared on The Daily Show (interview + performance), and appeared on the June 2023 cover of Texas Monthly. Crockett performed at both nights of Willie Nelson’s 90th birthday celebration at the Hollywood Bowl in April, and made his Bonnaroo debut this summer. Crockett also released The Man From Waco Redux, a companion to The Man From Waco featuring alternate versions of five songs, and Live from the Ryman, which documented Crockett’s sold out November 2022 debut at the Mother Church of Country Music.

Crockett will spend most of October as direct support to Chris Stapleton in arenas and amphitheaters as part of the latest leg of the “All-American Roadshow.” Last week, Crockett announced he’ll be returning to Australia for an extensive 13-date headline tour beginning January 27th. Ahead of the Australian tour, Crockett will play two shows at the 3,950 capacity Mission Ballroom in Denver, CO on January 18th and 19th. In 2024, Crockett has also confirmed appearances at Stagecoach, Moon Crush Festival, Buckeye Country Superfest and Avetts at the Beach in Riviera Maya, Mexico with the Avett Brothers and other guests.
