December 18, 2019 – Charley Crockett is capping a breakout 2018 with his second cover story of December. The Austin, TX-based Crockett graced the cover of American Way magazine at the beginning of the month, and now he’s the cover star of the latest edition of the Austin Chronicle, with an insightful, in-depth feature as well (they also talk to Crockett about his upcoming open heart surgery in January 2019).
Crockett released two albums in 2018, both via Son of Davy/Thirty Tigers. Lonesome As A Shadow was released in April to press raves. The album is also found on multiple year-end lists, including Paste’s “10 Best Roots & Blues Albums of 2018” list, where they say, “with a gliding, knifing tenor and a well-oiled machine of a band, he’s the real thing.”
Crockett also surprised released his second album of 2018, Charley Crockett presents Lil G.L.’s Blue Bonanza, earlier this month. In a 4 ½-star review, All Music says “Crockett and crew spend some time getting gritty, but they're closer to an old-fashioned country & western band, the kind that wants to be sure the dancefloor is filled from the start of the set to its end.” Wide Open Country says “the old soul has made a name for himself as not only a master interpreter of traditional songs, but also one of the finest torch-carriers of classic-minded country, blues and Cajun music for the modern world,” while Rolling Stone says the album’s first single “Good Time Charley’s Got The Blues,” a cover of Danny O’Keefe’s “Good Time Charlie’s Got The Blues,” finds that “Crockett’s forlorn drawl gives the dusty classic a fresh sheen, with Rhodes piano, rippling guitar leads and a whistle solo in the closing bars.”
Crockett will wrap up 2018 with a run of headline shows in legendary Texas venues like Billy Bob's Texas, Luckenbach Dancehall, and Antone's with Jaime Wyatt. In 2019, he's booked to play major festivals like Stagecoach as well as headline tours in North America, UK, Europe, and Australia.
