“Fearless, honest and bitingly funny, Issues is one of the most promising debut albums of the year” (Wide Open Country) – hear Elaina Kay’s Issues now before Friday release
August 1, 2019 - Dallas, TX-based Elaina Kay will release her debut album Issues on August 2nd via her own Rockin’ C Records (distributed by Smith Music). Produced by Paul Cauthen, and featuring the Texas Gentlemen as the backing band, Issues is a bold, swaggering debut. Kay premieres the album via Wide Open Country, who call it a “bold eight song collection.”
D Magazine (Dallas, TX) profiled Kay, saying she’s “in the latest in a crop of immensely talented local artists–think Charley Crockett, Vandoliers, and Joshua Ray Walker–who are redefining the city’s music scene into a newfound hub for musicians whose tunes don’t fit into today’s warped definition of country music.”
Recorded at Modern Electric Sound Recorders in Dallas and engineered by Jeff Saenz, Issues finds Kay at centerstage. She’s defiant yet vulnerable, hopeful but wry. The album wraps all these occasionally opposing forces in Kay’s countrified rock-and-roll to create a modern portrait of steely femininity that’s sad, funny, and ultimately, inspiring. Kay’s moody soprano slides from breathy storytelling to golden-era country songwriting and back again, nuanced and captivating. She wrote or co-wrote seven of the eight tracks, and the result is a layered collection that is both starkly personal and intensely relatable.
Early praise has steadily rolled in for Kay and Issues. The Boot calls the album "a rollicking and self-assured record," American Songwriter highlights first single “Daddy Issues,” and the Dallas Observer praises her “straightforward writing style that is deep-rooted in personal experience.”
