“One Part Grassroots Social Activism And Two Parts Alt Country Guitar Rock,” Powerful New Jess Klein Track Premieres At The Bluegrass Situation
Listen To “Dear God,” From New Album Learning Faith Out June 24th, here:
May 29, 2014 - Jess Klein’s new album Learning Faith, out June 24th, is a fiery meditation on the roots of belief - religious, political, personal. There may be no song on the album that better reflects this than “Dear God.” The Austin, TX resident says it’s “a song about a young woman in Texas who can't get proper health care because our governor turned down billions of dollars in federal aid.” The track premieres today on The Bluegrass Situation, who call Klein’s music “one part grassroots social activism and two parts alt country guitar rock.”
Learning Faith was recorded in Austin, TX at the Aerie with production from Mark “Professor Feathers” Addison. While the album has a big sound, Klein and Addison wanted to keep the feel of it very raw. To achieve that, in many cases Addison doubled Klein’s stomp box or electric guitar so the rhythms and the riffs - while simple - would sound huge. Guitarist Billy Masters (Suzanne Vega, Dar Williams) came in and created a layer of atmosphere on top of the rhythm and the vocals, Rob Hooper (Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Guy Forsyth) added real drums where they were needed to drive something home, and Wendy Colonna added some gorgeous low harmonies.
