Jess Klein’s New Album Learning Faith Is A Fiery Meditation On Belief, American Songwriter Premieres Title Track
Album Out June 24th
April 25, 2014 – Jess Klein - whom the New York Times calls an Austin songwriter who "has country roots, but who pushes her songs toward philosophical thoughts" – will release her powerful new album Learning Faith on June 24th. The album is a fiery meditation on the roots of belief - religious, political, personal. Learning Faith also features a tougher sound than Klein’s previous work, with a full band adding a gritty edge to much of the album.
Listen to “Learning Faith” at American Songwriter:
The title track kicks off the album with an emphatic backbeat and hazy guitar as Klein sings about the paradox of learning something that is impossible to define intellectually. “If There’s a God” is Klein’s first person account of her experience of joining 6,000 strong at the Capitol Building in Austin to protest Governor Perry’s policies on abortion. “Surrender” deals in personal but no less important politics, focusing on the idea of letting go of defenses we put up with others, ones that need to be removed in order to truly let love into our lives. “Wish” strips things down to just Klein’s voice and an acoustic guitar, as she sings of an adult looking back on a childhood with parents’ whose behavior was scary and unpredictable.
Learning Faith was recorded in Austin, TX at the Aerie with production from Mark “Professor Feathers” Addison. While the album has a big sound, Klein and Addison wanted to keep the feel of it very raw. To achieve that, in many cases Addison doubled Klein’s stomp box or electric guitar so the rhythms and the riffs - while simple - would sound huge. Billy Masters (Suzanne Vega, Dar Williams) came in and created a layer of atmosphere on top of the rhythm and the vocals, Rob Hooper (Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Guy Forsyth) added real drums where they were needed to drive something home, and Wendy Colonna added some gorgeous low harmonies.
