February 6, 2019 – It’s only February, but Dallas, TX singer and songwriter Joshua Ray Walker is already looking like one of 2019’s breakout country/Americana artists. His stunning debut Wish You Were Here was released last month to critical acclaim, and today Rolling Stone Country premieres the video for album standout “Canyon,” directed by Josh David Jordan. The song serves as both a way for Walker to try and cope with his father’s diagnosis of stage 4 lung cancer, and also an introspective look at himself. As Rolling Stone says, “Walker sings of an aching, all-consuming emptiness in his singular, world-weary voice.”
Wish You Were Here is quickly moving up the Americana Music Association radio album charts, up five spots to #34 this week. “Canyon” is shooting up the Americana radio singles chart as well, up to #33 this week (from #50 last week). Walker will open a couple Texas shows for BJ Barham of American Aquarium this month, and he’ll be heading out on the road a lot more in 2019, having recently signed with Red11 Music booking agency, also home to Turnpike Troubadours, Old 97's, Charley Crockett, Cody Johnson, Shooter Jennings, American Aquarium and others.
Here’s what we’ve been hearing about Walker and Wish You Were Here:
"Joshua Ray Walker’s debut feels less like a shaky first album and more like a portfolio of greatest hits."
“Destined to be one of the year's finest records thanks to tracks such as ‘Canyon’ and ‘Working Girl,’ both of which are stunning examples of the way that Walker blends lyrics and melodies into tunes that will make you think, laugh and cry — or all three at once.”
-The Boot (2019 Artist to Watch)
“A lyricist gifted beyond his young years,”
“One of the most exciting voices to come out of Texas this year, Dallas-born singer-songwriter Joshua Ray Walker follows in the footsteps of Lone Star State greats like Rodney Crowell and Guy Clark with his new album Wish You Were Here. Country purists, look no further than Walker.”
-Wide Open Country (2019 Artist To Watch)
“No-skip collection of country jewels"
-Dallas Morning News
“Walker is on a trajectory that could make him one of the most powerful voices in Americana music."
-D Magazine (Dallas, TX)
"Expressing utter despair in gentle slurs and serene hope with a sweet twang, as innocent as Walker’s face. The stories he tells have all the hallmarks of someone wise enough to not simply overcome their struggles but to learn from them as well."
