"Lola Kirke is your favorite New Yorker making contemporary country music."
October 13, 2023 – Opening with a tasty Telecaster riff, Lola Kirke’s latest single “He Says Y’All” amps up the twang. A cheeky ode to a Southern beau, “He Says Y’All” is a standout from Kirke’s Elle King-produced EP Country Curious, out February 16, 2024 via One Riot Records. In a new lyric video for the single, Kirke and her friends Tim and Tenaya teach a line dance to the track from a rooftop in NYC. Kirke begins the second leg of her fall North American headline tour on November 1st in San Francisco, CA, and today she announces new 2024 tour dates. Already confirmed for a Stagecoach Festival appearance in April, Kirke has added a number of 2024 dates, including shows in Nashville, Los Angeles, Atlanta, New Orleans, Houston, Minneapolis, and Chicago.
“I live in Nashville most of the time and I was listening to country radio, and I did honestly find myself very drawn to Bro Country, just because I feel like there’s a science behind those songs that makes them stick in my head,” Kirke explains to Nylon. “I was like, I want to, just as an experiment, as an exercise, try my hand at writing a bro country song. Singing a Bro Country song as a woman made it feel very feminist.”
Country Curious showcases a young woman finding her musical footing in a thrilling way. In addition to collaborations with King, Rosanne Cash and First Aid Kit on Country Curious, Kirke got to write songs with some of Nashville’s finest songwriters, including Aaron Ratiere (Miranda Lambert, Midland), Jon Decious (Ashley McBryde), Mary Kutter (Bailey Zimmerman, Nate Smith) and Jason Nix (Lainey Wilson). Kirke has lived in Nashville since 2020 and has made it her goal to immerse herself in the city’s world-renowned songwriting community and continue to refine her craft.
“What I’ve long loved about Country is the room it gives for women to be extremely dynamic and have that heart and that toughness and the ability to be domestic and wild,” Kirke continues. “There’s also a space for men to cry. I’ve never heard so many references to men crying as I have in Country music. Those contradictions are so interesting to me.”
