“A Swirling, Whirling Palette Of Colors” (NPR Music), Niyaz Continue To Win Raves For New Album As U.S. Dates Start This Week

May 5, 2015 - As they prepare to launch a string of U.S. tour dates, Niyaz continue to win raves for their latest album The Fourth Light, out now on Six Degrees Records. In her latest Latitudes column, showcasing “the International music you must hear,” NPR Music’s Anastasia Tsioulcas praised Niyaz and The Fourth Light, saying “with electronic beats, they create a swirling, whirling palette of colors fronted by Ali's rich and precise voice.” The duo - lead singer, co-composer and co-producer Azam Ali and co-writer/instrumentalist Loga R. Torkian – will kick of the U.S. run with a show at the Winter Garden Theater in New York City, part of the 2015 Global Beat Festival.

Since it’s release, The Fourth Light has won a wide swath of praise from various outlets. The Wall Street Journal calls it "hypnotic," MTV Iggy says Niyaz "continue to progress with a musically varied and rhythmically complex album, while reaching deep into Sufi traditions to find new and still-relevant inspirations," and KPCC Take Two says the album is "refined into slinky tracks deftly weaving modern electronics through melodies, rhythms and instrumentations derived from various Islamic cultural traditions, centered on their own Persian roots."

At the center of the album is Rabia Al Basri, the first female Sufi mystic and poet. Born in the 8th century in what is now Iraq, she served as the main source of inspiration for the music on the album. The duo also worked with GRAMMY-nominated mixer Damian Taylor (Bjork, The Killers, Arcade Fire), who aided in achieving a more dynamic, expansive sound for the album. And in a distinct change for Niyaz, Azam programmed all the beats on the album, a role she took on for the first time.
