Hopscotch, Americana Fest And West Coast Tour Part Of River Whyless’ Busy Fall
Listen To New Single “The Hunt” Here, All West Coast Shows With Horse Feathers
AUGUST 12, 2015 - River Whyless, whose “distinct songwriting voices add up to a cohesive sound – not a simple thing to do” (NPR World Café), are gearing up for a busy fall, with festival appearances and a West Coast tour. The Asheville, NC band will play the Hopscotch Festival alongside acts that include TV on the Radio, Dwight Yoakam, Pusha T and Godspeed You! Black Emperor on September 12th and then head to Nashville for a performance at the Americana Music Festival on September 19th. The band will then join Horse Feathers for a West Coast tour beginning October 6th, the band’s first in three years.
River Whyless also recently released new single “The Hunt,” which features pristine three-part vocal harmonies, a driving beat and fiery fiddle. The song is also being used as part of a campaign for the Asheville, NC tourism bureau. It will be featured in a TV and online spot that helps showcase the band’s hometown, where they were also recently named “Best Acoustic/Folk” act by local weekly the Mountain Xpress. River Whyless’ Alex McWalters says of the partnership, "We're all very proud to call Asheville home and we hope the city continues to grow in a way that remains conducive and inspiring to the members of its unique community.” Watch the beautifully shot spot here.
The band’s self-titled EP, recorded with Kevin Ratterman (Andrew Bird, My Morning Jacket, Ben Sollee) and released earlier this year, won a glowing swath of praise from critics:
“River Whyless is on the verge of a very exciting musical journey that you’d be foolish to miss out on.”
“The EP reveals how near-constant touring has lead to tremendous growth for the group.”
“This group brings interesting and sophisticated musical technique to the forefront.”

River Whyless is a band much like that titular body of water - a mingling of currents, a flow of time and physical space, all brought together in a murmuring sense of purpose. It is the expression of a group of musicians, Ryan O'Keefe (guitars, vocals), Halli Anderson (violin, vocals), Alex McWalters (drums, percussion) and Daniel Shearin (bass, vocals, harmonium, cello, banjo) - three of whom are songwriters -who have played together in various forms since their college days in the North Carolina mountains.
