Sally & George Premiere Playful “Tip My Heart” Vid Via No Depression
Watch the playful video for “Tip My Heart,” the standout title track from Sally & George’s debut album via No Depression. ND says the Nashville-based duo put “a fresh spin on a classic sound. The group's single ‘Tip My Heart’ gives a nod to country duos like Johnny and June with an added dose of doo-wop.”
NPR Music says “if Buddy Holly is somehow still capable of hearing the sounds emanating from this mortal plane, there's a good chance he's sporting a broad grin upon encountering ‘Tip My Heart.’”
A chance encounter at the 2012 Bristol Rhythm and Roots Reunion was the beginning of the journey that led ex-Della Mae member Shelby Means and Sol Driven Train’s Joel Timmons to create the duo Sally & George.
Tip My Heart is an engaging, eclectic album, as well as a thoughtful meditation on Shelby (Sally) and Joel's (George) courtship and love (the duo got engaged in July 2016 on a mountain in North Carolina after work on Tip My Heart was completed).
The album deftly moves from rollicking, electrified rockers to stripped down, gauzy reflections on love and faith, to walking bass-led country-indebted duets. All of it is done tastefully, with an earnestness that does not shy away from humor or the occasional cuss word. There's also production work from Shovels & Rope's Michael Trent (an old friend of Joel's, a 1/3 of the album was recorded at S&R's home studio).
American Songwriter says album standout "Love Is Gonna Live" is "a song that is equal parts Buck Owens and Johnny and June," and the The Bluegrass Situation premiered "Hey Wow," a nod to the duets of Johnny and June Carter Cash as well as John Prine and Iris Dement.
