Snarky Puppy Release New Immigrance Bonus Track, Kick Off 1st European Leg Of 2019 World Tour This Week

Listen to “Chrysalis” here

June 21, 2019 – Snarky Puppy just wrapped up the first U.S. leg of their 2019 world tour with a sold out show at Brooklyn Steel in Brooklyn, NY. Ahead of the June 22nd start of the first European leg of the world tour – which began in April and will hit 24 countries over the course of 111 shows – the band has released a new bonus track from the recording session of their latest album Immigrance. “Chrysalis” is a composition from Snarky Puppy saxophonist Bob Reynolds, which was born out of creative frustration, but grounded in childlike wonder.

“’Chrysalis’ was born out of frustration,” says Reynolds. “In the weeks leading up to recording Immigrance, I was trying to write a song to contribute. It wasn't going well. The day before leaving I still had nothing I liked. In a moment of frustration, I went for a jog, during which a melody popped into my head. By the time I got home, I had a full song in mind. I recorded a rough demo (which I finished in the Uber to the airport) and voilà, I had a song to share. In the same weeks all this ‘writing’ was going on, my kids were tending to a butterfly garden in our backyard. If you've never seen one (I hadn't), it's incredible. You watch caterpillars become butterflies in the span of a couple of weeks. But the most magical part of the transformation is invisible to the outside world. It occurs inside a hard skin called a chrysalis. It seemed an appropriate metaphor for the experience of composing music. Lots of internal work the world never sees and at the end, if you're lucky, a song emerges. The contrasting sections and modulations in ‘Chrysalis’ reminded me of that metamorphosis. My own as well as the butterflies. P.S. We released our butterflies the same day I wrote the song.”

“During the Immigrance sessions, we recorded more songs than we could squeeze onto the album,” says band leader Michael League. “So, over the course of the year, we'll be releasing three brand new, full-length compositions by Bill Laurance, Marcelo Woloski, and Bob Reynolds, as well as extended versions of three of the album's tracks.”

Immigrance, which debuted on five different Billboard charts (including #2 on Heatseekers and #8 on Independent albums), has garnered a wide swath of critical praise, here’s what we’ve been hearing:

“Workouts like ‘Chonks’ and ‘Bigly Strictness’ allow some of the 19 musicians to stretch out with liquid guitar, horn or keyboard solos, yet the band leans into its grooves — more in service to melodies than chops.” -Rolling Stone

“Winner of three Grammys and numerous other distinctions, the instrumental mega-combo is also a globalist when it comes to musical styles, finding room to add a wide spectrum of world sounds to its jazz and funk foundations.” -Associated Press

“Snarky Puppy aren’t exactly jazz: their music combines jazz with funk, prog rock, and rhythms and textures from around the world. But they’re almost always interesting, and their new album is definitely worth hearing.” -Stereogum

“You could call the music that the ever-evolving collective Snarky Puppy makes ‘jazz,’ but that wouldn’t tell the full story. The band produces globe- and genre-trotting instrumental music that showcases both individual players (as many as 19 on this year’s “Immigrance”) and the group as a whole.” -Washington Post

“Snarky Puppy might be today’s most popular band whose audience wouldn’t be fazed by a nearly 10-minute-long lead single with no words.” -New York Times

Immigrance is less about each bandmember's individual improvisational contribution (though there are moments of brilliant soloing), and more focused on the group's intricate, mutative arrangements.” -AllMusic
