“The best-known twangy, danceable honky tonk-style tracks go to men, but Dean flips their signature bravado on its head with brash songs about a single woman’s empowerment.”
-Grammy.com (“5 Female Artists Creating The Future Of Country Music”)
April 4, 2023 – Summer Dean is unafraid of adult conversations. And not the boring kind about taxes or what you’re up to this weekend. Dean wades into meaningful conversations in her expertly crafted songs – love, heartbreak, longing, what it means to be a single woman in your 40’s, what it means to chase your dreams when common sense might say it’s a bad idea. Dean examines all of this and more on her upcoming album The Biggest Life, produced by Bruce Robison and out June 16th via The Next Waltz. New single “She Ain’t Me” tackles an unrequited love and what might have been when your feelings for someone can’t be acted upon because they’re already with someone else.
“Some of the best songs ever written are about what’s hidden right there in plain sight,” Dean explains to Holler. “’She Ain’t Me’ is basically ‘I’m Not Her’ in reverse. It freezes a moment that feels like a lifetime.”
Dean’s devotion to honesty in the making of The Biggest Life extended to its creation, with these 13 songs being recorded completely analog at the Bunker, Robison’s Lockhart, TX studio, with a hand-picked band of collaborators. It’s a fitting approach for music that leaves nowhere to hide and spares no detail. In a moment where so much of country music is safe, slick and simple, there is indeed a rawness and a reality to Dean’s songs which sets her apart as a songwriter of substance (Dean wrote all 13 songs on the album, with only one co-write). It’s no wonder Texas legends like Robison, who agreed to produce Life on the strength of Dean’s demos, call her work “bracing.” The Biggest Life is a handmade album, teeming with unadorned, universal truths, written and performed by a consequential artist whose singular perspective on the world may just profoundly alter yours.
Dean has added an Austin, TX date with Mike and the Moonpies and new May headline shows to her already extension tour, which already includes a co-headlining tour with Rob Leines in June.
